SCC group of staff

Woking & District Unit is often on the look out for male and female staff (aged over 18) to help run the unit. No previous maritime experience or specialist skills are required: we provide thorough training. TS Dianthus has a friendly atmosphere and all new members are welcomed. Training the cadets and being a member of the Sea Cadet Corps is very rewarding and great fun. Since we aim to provide the highest quality instruction and activities for our cadets, we need a high level of commitment from our staff.

You can join either as a Civilian Instructor, or as a uniformed member of staff. All staff are appointed by the Unit Management Committee on the advice of the Commanding Officer §.

Specialist Staff members are made up of Civilian Instructors. This role is ideal for adults who can contribute a specialist skill (for example, Radio Communication or Sailing Instruction) but who do not wish to take on the extra responsibilities of Royal Naval Reserve status. Instructors are asked to give up one evening a week (though one evening a fortnight is possible) plus some weekends. We use instructors for the following activities:

  • Canoeing
  • Shooting
  • Communications
  • Computer Skills
  • Navigation
  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Engineering §

Uniformed staff of both sexes form the back-bone of the Sea Cadet Corps. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining a culture of excellence in their work with young people, but within the tradition of the Royal Navy. No specialist skills are demanded initially - new staff benefit from regular training (and payment for courses), access to Royal Naval ships and shore establishments, and can sail on T S Royalist and other Sea Cadet sail and power training vessels. You join initially as a Civilian Instructor for nine months, at the end of which time you will be interviewed by a District Interview Board. If you pass, you will be appointed as a Provisional Petty Officer (SCC) RNR. You can progress through Petty Officer, Chief Petty Officer, Sub Lieutenant, to Lieutenant (normally the highest rank in any Unit). Some Officers are appointed as Lieutenant Commander - usually after long service, or if they take on district or other responsibilities. You will receive a Uniform Allowance, and will be required to undertake regular training §.

Training

The Sea Cadet Corps offers excellent training to all members of staff and you will be expected to attend a number of training courses that will qualify you to be uprated. The timetable for attending courses is flexible and many courses are now run over a series of weekends §.

What you will do

On a day to day basis, the main roll of all members of staff is to train the Cadets. This may consist of part 1 syllabus training or part 2 specialist training. You may also be asked to take on duties within the Unit, such as being a Divisional Officer or the Boats Officer. Our Unit also runs a number of camps throughout the year which you can attend §.

Payment

The Sea Cadet Corps is a voluntary organisation and so you do not get paid for routine Cadet nights and the majority of events. However, if you attend training courses or certain camps, you will be paid by the Royal Navy; also your travel costs may be reimbursed. This applies to all members of staff other than civilian instructors §.

Joining

It is best to phone the Unit first and speak to the Commanding Officer. You will then be asked to attend an informal interview with the Commanding Officer and the Chairman of the Unit at a mutually convenient time. You will be asked to complete some paperwork and - all being well - will then be welcomed aboard as a member of the ship's company §!
