The parade celebrates Lord Nelson’s famous victory over the Franco-Spanish fleet at Cape Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.  This is thought to have been the turning point in the campaign against Napolean. In his moment of triumph, Nelson was shot on the quarterdeck of his flagshipVictory by a sniper and bled to death soon afterwards.  His body was brought back to Britain preserved in a barrel of brandy.
